Prototyping 3D Microfluidic Chips off Fused Silica

Fraunhofer ILT develops 3D microfluidic chips off fused silica by selective laser induced etching (SLE). In this process complex structures are written directly into fused silica with ultrashort pulsed laser radiation. After that, the irradiated material is removed by wet chemical etching out of the volume.

Customised glass and microfluidic components

Using ultra-short pulsed laser radiation, transparent materials such as glass, crystals or ceramics can be ablated, cut, drilled or structured with high precision for a wide range of applications. By targeted ablation of glass surfaces, components can be manufactured with high precision and surfaces can be functionalised.
Selective laser-induced etching" (SLE) offers the possibility of producing any 3D structures and complex components made of glass or other materials. In this way, even hollow bodies with complex geometries in volume, for example in sapphire, can be produced.
